Brazil of Fact - Ten senators missed more than 13 deliberative sessions in the first half of the year. Participation by parliamentarians is mandatory in these sessions. The absences are equivalent to more than a quarter of the attendances they were required to attend. The survey was published on Tuesday (28) by the website Congresso em Foco.
José Maranhão (PMDB-PB) was the champion of absences, but the 81-year-old senator had some of them justified by medical reasons; he had dengue fever at the beginning of the year, which prevented him from participating in most sessions.
Meanwhile, the leader of the evangelical caucus, Magno Malta (PP-ES), appears second on the list of absences, with 19 absences from deliberative sessions. In a statement to the website Congresso em Foco, the parliamentarian's press office justified the absences as being due to meetings the senator held throughout Brazil. He is the president of the Prosthesis CPI and spokesperson for evangelical sectors. In June alone, Malta missed eight consecutive sessions.
Senators are instructed that no activities should be scheduled during the same period as a deliberative session.
The other eight senators who appear on the list of absentees are: Roberto Rocha (PSB-MA), with 15 absences; Sérgio Petecão (PMN-AC), Ricardo Ferraço (PMDB-ES) with 14 absences; and Paulo Bauer (PSDB-SC), all three with 14 absences. Paulo Bauer was also absent due to health reasons. Also on the list with 13 absences each are Ivo Cassol (PP-RO), Zezé Perrella (PDT-MG), Gladson Cameli (PP-AC), and Douglas Cintra (PTB-PE). Cintra is the substitute for the licensed senator and current Minister of Development, Armando Monteiro.
Among the legislators, only Delcídio do Amaral (PT-MS), Flexa Ribeiro (PSDB-PA), Reguffe (PDT-DF), Romário (PSB-RJ) and Waldemir Moka (PMDB-MS) attended 100% of the deliberative sessions.
