Crime in the Federal District falls

Over the weekend, the Military Police made 48 arrests; 35 weapons were seized; the number of homicides dropped from 14 to five, and express kidnappings fell to nine.

Brasilia Agency – Operation Retomada, carried out by the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF) since last Friday afternoon, ensured a peaceful weekend for the population. The work of the police officers on the streets resulted in 35 weapons seized – a record in the Federal District – and no incidents of robbery resulting in death. Homicides were reduced to five and robberies involving kidnapping fell to nine. In two days, the PM made 48 arrests in flagrante delicto.

“Work has returned to normal. Operation Retomada did not involve increasing the number of officers on the streets. What happened was that officers provided support and oversaw the actions. The internal affairs department did not identify any police officer acting inappropriately. We made a concentrated effort to overcome the crisis and now we can implement the new Public Security program for the Federal District,” assured Colonel Suamy Santana, who took office as commander of the Military Police on Friday afternoon.

From now on, the fight against crime will be carried out in an integrated manner, according to the needs of each Administrative Region. Strategies will be established to combat crime through joint action by security forces, based on the main criminal occurrences recorded and with the active participation of the population.

“The philosophy of the new policy is to recognize and address regional public security problems through management in which responsibility will be shared. We will jointly plan the operational actions to be developed in each AISP (Integrated Public Security Area). We will also establish methods to plan, coordinate, supervise, and operationally control the actions undertaken in each RISP (Integrated Public Security Region),” explained the Secretary of Public Security, Sandro Avelar.
