Reuters With salaries and pensions expected to reach a combined total of 130 reais per month soon, former President Jair Bolsonaro and former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro will live in a rented house in an upscale condominium in Brasília, and each will have exclusive offices at the Liberal Party headquarters in the nation's capital to work, respectively, as honorary president and president of the PL Women's wing, for political purposes.

Bolsonaro arrives in Brasília this Thursday after three months in Florida, United States, where he traveled before the end of his term, which led him not to hand over the presidential sash to the current head of the Executive branch, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Michelle, who also went to the US, is already in Brasília.

It is unprecedented, since the return to democracy, for a former president who does not rule out seeking re-election -- and wants to lead the opposition -- to coexist in the federal capital with a current occupant of the Planalto Palace.

The mere arrival of Bolsonaro in Brasília shows an impact on the routine of the capital, accustomed to revolving around the president: there is an expectation of crowds of supporters at the airport and the prediction of blocked roads in the city.

Originally residing in Rio de Janeiro, the political birthplace of Bolsonarism, the couple decided to live in Solar de Brasília, an upscale gated community located in Jardim Botânico, one of Brasília's most expensive neighborhoods. The two-story house is about 12 kilometers from the Palácio do Planalto (Presidential Palace).

The couple will be responsible for paying the rent, estimated at 12 reais per month, according to a source from the PL party.

Despite the high cost, Jair and Michelle should have no difficulty affording their new home in Brasília. They will have at least four sources of income to cover their expenses, which, added together, should exceed 130 reais in gross value starting next month.

Bolsonaro and Michelle will each receive a salary equivalent to that of a federal deputy as honorary president of the PL party and president of PL Mulher (the women's wing of the PL party). Until this month, the salary of a federal deputy is 39,2 reais, but from April there will be an adjustment—approved by the National Congress last December—and it will increase to 41,6 reais. With these two salaries alone, they will receive approximately 83,3 reais per month.

By order of the Speaker of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), Bolsonaro has also been receiving a pension since December for the period he served as a federal deputy, from 1991 to 2018. This benefit takes into account factors such as time as a parliamentarian and contributions.

According to data from February, the latest available from the Chamber of Deputies, Bolsonaro's parliamentary pension is 35,2 reais gross. However, this amount will increase from April onwards with the implementation of the salary adjustment for deputies, which has an automatic effect on pensions.

The former president also has a third source of income. The oldest of these is 11,9 reais gross as a reserve military officer, according to data from the Transparency Portal.
