With Bolsonaro in the dock, the Liberal Party threatens to paralyze Congress in favor of a broad amnesty for the coup plotters.
Valdemar Costa Neto states that there will be no concessions in the amnesty bill.
247 - The president of the PL party, Valdemar Costa Neto, stated that the party is willing to "paralyze" the National Congress if the amnesty for those accused of involvement in the attempted coup d'état is not put to a vote. According to Valdemar, the PL caucus has enough votes to approve the proposal, and the party's priority is to guarantee a "broad, general, and unrestricted" amnesty. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) resumed the trial regarding the coup plot – which includes Jair Bolsonaro (PL) among the defendants – this Tuesday.
He emphasized that the party does not intend to concede to adjustments in the text, even in the face of resistance from the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), who has already spoken out against the measure in its most comprehensive version.
"Let's shut down Congress," says Valdemar.
“If they don’t vote on the amnesty, we will shut down Congress. Today we have a majority to do so. We didn’t want to cause harm to the country, obviously not, but we will have to stop, because we have no other weapon, and we have to do something,” said Costa Neto in an interview with Rádio Eldorado this Tuesday (9), according to the newspaper. The State of S. Paul.
When asked if he would compromise on certain aspects of the proposal to ensure its approval, Valdemar was categorical: "No."
Tarcísio, the Supreme Federal Court, and demonstrations.
The president of the PL also commented on the statements made by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos), who called Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), a "tyrant" at a pro-Bolsonaro rally last Sunday.
Valdemar said he avoids direct confrontations with Supreme Court justices: “My lawyer advised me not to attack any Supreme Court justice, and he’s right about that, we have to respect the Supreme Court, but what’s happening is madness,” he stated, classifying Tarcísio’s reaction as “natural.”
US flag and support for Bolsonaro
The leader also expressed enthusiasm about the presence of the United States flag during the September 7th event on Paulista Avenue, which had been criticized by sectors of the right wing itself.
“I loved it when I saw the American flag in the street. Why? (...) This will reach Trump, so he can see that the Brazilian people are not against Americans, that we want them on our side, and we need them today because we have no one else to turn to,” he said, referring to the current president of the United States, Donald Trump.
Valdemar also highlighted the expectation that the amnesty would enable Jair Bolsonaro's candidacy in 2026. According to him, if the courts prevent his registration, it will be up to Bolsonaro to choose his replacement and his running mate.
Romário and internal disputes in the Liberal Party.
Regarding the situation of Senator Romário (PL-RJ), who was heckled at the demonstration for not supporting the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes, Valdemar ruled out expelling him from the party.
“We have to respect everyone’s personal position. Romário has been targeted by the fans for some time now,” he declared, recalling that the former player cited a personal closeness with Moraes to justify his stance.
The PL leader also mentioned possible names for future Senate races in São Paulo, should Eduardo Bolsonaro not return to the country. He cited as alternatives the deputy mayor Ricardo Mello Araújo, pastor Marco Feliciano (PL-SP), and federal deputy Cezinha de Madureira (PSD-SP).
