Brasilia may enter a state of alert or warning during the holiday.
On September 7th, the Federal District will have humidity levels ranging between 70% and 20%; therefore, the Inmet forecast is that Brasília will be in a state of attention (humidity between 30% and 21%) or alert (between 20% and 12%) – and not in a state of emergency (below 12%) – during the Independence Day Parade on the Esplanade of Ministries.
The Federal District will have humidity levels ranging between 70% and 20% on September 7th. Therefore, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) predicts that Brasília will be in a state of attention (humidity between 30% and 21%) or alert (between 20% and 12%) – and not in a state of emergency (below 12%) – during the Independence Day Parade on the Esplanade of Ministries.
"In the early morning, humidity will be around 70%. From 11 am onwards, it will begin to decrease, reaching its lowest point at 16 pm, when it should be around 20%. I don't believe it will drop much lower than that. In the worst-case scenario, we will be on alert," predicts Inmet meteorologist Ingrid Peixoto.
Last weekAccording to the assessment by meteorologists at Inmet, there was a risk of humidity falling below 12% during the week of September 7th, which could result in a red alert and, consequently, a declaration of a State of Emergency by Civil Defense.
In these situations, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a complete halt to all activities between 10 am and 16 pm, especially physical education classes, mail deliveries, and garbage collection. Therefore, meteorologists were concerned that the dry weather could compromise the September 7th commemorative activities on the Esplanade of Ministries.
The WHO also recommends suspending activities that require gatherings of people in enclosed spaces, such as classrooms and even cinemas. Air-conditioned environments are not recommended because air conditioning removes moisture from these spaces, further harming people. Humidification of indoor environments, especially hospitals and rooms frequented by children and the elderly, is also among the recommendations foreseen for the state of emergency.
In milder situations, Inmet may issue yellow (attention state) or orange (alert state) alerts. In the first case, when the relative humidity is between 30% and 21%, it is recommended that people protect themselves from the sun; avoid outdoor physical exercise between 11 am and 15 pm; drink more water; and humidify their indoor environments.
The orange alert is issued when humidity ranges from 20% to 12%. In this case, in addition to what is stipulated by the yellow alert, it is recommended to avoid crowds in enclosed spaces and to moisturize eyes and nose with saline solution. The period during which physical exercise should be avoided is extended to between 10 am and 16 pm.
According to meteorologist Hamilton Carvalho, also from Inmet, there is no rain forecast for this week in the Federal District. "The sky will be clear to partly cloudy, with dry haze and a maximum temperature around 28°C and a minimum of 14°C." He adds that humidity has improved compared to previous days. Carvalho adds that Inmet's forecast for the week has a high accuracy rate, above 90%.
He explains that, in general, Brasília has higher humidity than other regions of the Federal District and its surroundings. This happens because the far east of the city and parts of Minas Gerais tend to have higher humidity due to the circulation of "higher-level winds" [higher altitude] that bring some moisture from the ocean. Despite the improvement in Brasília, the large central area of the country continues to have low humidity.
Traditionally, the event begins at 9:00 AM on the Esplanade of Ministries, with the arrival of the President of the Republic at the presidential tribune. Throughout the parade there will be presentations of military personnel, vehicles, cavalrymen, and members of the Presidential Guard Battalion. This year's theme is "Long Live Your Independence".
