247 - An audio recording published by journalist Carol Pires, a columnist for the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and The New York Times, shows Jair Bolsonaro (PL) blaming the church for the poverty in Brazil.
The audio was recorded during a speech by Bolsonaro - then a congressman in the FHC government - defending his population control bill.
"Mr. Fernando Henrique Cardoso, listening to the church – which in my opinion is largely responsible for the misery in which this country finds itself – and also listening to the father of demagoguery, Mr. Betinho [Brazilian sociologist and human rights activist. He conceived and dedicated himself to the Citizenship Action Against Hunger project], ended up vetoing this project," says Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro further adds: "I have always said that the fight against hunger, poverty, and violence requires a policy of birth control."
