Drainage basin in the Federal District fills up for the first time, reinforcing the fight against flooding.
The newly integrated system is already showing positive results in Asa Norte and promises to alleviate the history of flooding in the Federal District.
247 - The Drenar DF drainage system, recently inaugurated, is already beginning to demonstrate its effectiveness in combating flooding in Asa Norte. According to information from Brasilia Agency, the project's detention basin received rainwater for the first time after the connection of the new drainage infrastructure with the old network. In the early hours of this Thursday (23), the reservoir recorded a level of up to 80 centimeters of captured water.
The integration of the networks was completed last Wednesday (22), with the installation of two diversion devices that direct the flow of rain to the new system, eliminating the risk of overloading the old structure. “We are very satisfied. This shows that part of the released network and the basin are already working as expected, capturing the rainwater,” said Hamilton Lourenço Filho, technical director of the Federal District Development Agency (Terracap).
Robust infrastructure and innovation against floods
The retention basin occupies an area of 37 m², with a capacity of up to 96 m³ of water and a usable volume of 70 m³. Even operating only partially, the system is already impacting the lives of residents and workers in the region. “It was as if it hadn't even rained. The Drenar DF project is very important,” highlighted banker Esdras Magalhães, who works in the North Banking Sector.
With an investment of R$ 180 million, the project promises to double the drainage capacity of rainwater in Asa Norte without modifying the existing network. The pipeline network, which begins near the Arena BRB Mané Garrincha and ends at Lake Paranoá, crosses several strategic points in the city, such as blocks 902, 702, 302, 102 and 202, as well as the W3 Norte, L2 Norte and L4 Norte avenues.
The garbage problem persists.
Although the infrastructure is functioning, the presence of solid waste in the basin remains a challenge. On Thursday morning, it was possible to observe trash that had reached the reservoir carried by the piping. Hamilton Lourenço emphasized the importance of proper disposal: “We ask that the population be aware that trash belongs in the trash can. Not having this awareness has a very high environmental cost.”
The project features a sorting system that separates waste from rainwater through sedimentation. The treated water flows into Lake Paranoá, while the Urban Development Company of the New Capital (Novacap) carries out maintenance and collection of the accumulated material.
Impact on the lives of residents
Besides Esdras Magalhães, other residents and workers reported relief with the start of the system's operation. Nilton Henrique Cazzaniga, also a bank employee, emphasized: “Today I came to work with the certainty that I would arrive safely. Drenar DF will be a guarantee that everything will remain as it is today, even after heavy rains.”
Drenar DF represents a significant advancement in stormwater management in the capital, alleviating the impact of rainfall and promoting improvements in the daily lives of the population.
