Brazil Agency – The new Attorney General of the Union (AGU) minister, Jorge Messias, announced today (2) the creation of the National Prosecutor's Office for the Defense of Democracy. The announcement was made during a ceremony in which the minister took command of the body, after being appointed yesterday (1st) by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

According to the minister, the Attorney General's Office will adopt measures to combat misinformation and promote the effectiveness of public policies. "The Attorney General's Office will be a key institution for the development of public administration," he stated.

Messias said that the body will also work to restore harmony between the branches of government.

"Upon assuming the position of Attorney General, I hope to make a decisive contribution to the restoration of our democracy by resuming harmony among the branches of government. Attacks on authorities will no longer be tolerated," he assured.

In his speech, the minister also assesses the current political climate. According to Messias, the people have managed to "put Brazil back on the path to democracy."

"Rarely in our history have we witnessed such constant attacks and threats to the pillars of our democracy. Disrespect for human rights, political persecution, censorship, constant attacks on democratic institutions, the dismantling of public policies, denialism as a method, incitement to hatred and prejudice," he concluded.

During the ceremony, the minister was honored by former President Dilma Rousseff. During Dilma's administration, Messias served as deputy chief of legal affairs for the Presidency of the Republic. "I thank Messias for helping me get it right," she declared.

Currently, the Attorney General's Office (AGU) is involved in approximately 20 million cases and has R$ 800 million in litigation.
