247 - In the early morning of January 9, 2023, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes took decisive measures to contain the coup attempt that began in Brasília with the destruction of the buildings of the three branches of government. In two sweeping orders, Moraes ordered the immediate dismantling of pro-Bolsonaro encampments in front of military barracks and the arrest of participants, as well as blocking access to the capital for demonstrators.

Em interview Speaking to CNN, the minister highlighted the importance of removing the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, for 90 days as a preventative measure to stop other state governments from joining the attempted coup, thus avoiding a potential "domino effect" among state military police forces. These actions were essential to halt the expansion of the coup movement.

The inaction of the Federal District Military Police (PMDF) was cited as crucial to the escalation of events. Moraes, alerted by his children on social media, realized that the invaders were already entering the National Congress. The PMDF, responsible for security, failed to comply with the "Integrated Action Protocol" established in previous meetings, contributing to the lack of control over the situation.

The minister, who is overseeing the investigations at the Supreme Federal Court (STF), indicated that the trial of the group responsible for the attacks should be concluded by April, with 30 defendants already convicted of various crimes. Moraes emphasized that the removal of Ibaneis from office and other measures adopted were crucial to containing the attempted coup, ensuring accountability for all those involved.
