247 - The Supreme Federal Court (STF) decided this Monday (24) that the governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB-AL), must return to office.

The decisions were made by ministers Gilmar Mendes and Luís Roberto Barroso, who in separate rulings granted requests to overturn the Superior Court of Justice's (STJ) decision to remove Dantas from office amidst the electoral dispute, according to the journalist's column. Monica bergamo

The Supreme Court's decision is a political defeat for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Dantas is running for reelection, is an ally of Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), and opposes both Lira and Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

In his decision, Gilmar Mendes understood that the Electoral Code prohibits precautionary measures against candidates for majoritarian positions (such as governors) from 15 days before the first round until 48 hours after the second round. Barroso, however, considered that there is "reasonable doubt" about the competence of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), responsible for analyzing cases involving governors, to order the removal, since the suspicions refer to the period when Paulo Dantas was a state deputy.
