PSDB files complaint against Gleisi and Lula

Senator Aloysio Nunes Ferreira wants to investigate whether the dismissal of Gleisi Hoffmann from Itaipu, during the government of former President Lula, was illegal or not; she, currently Minister of the Civil House, received all severance pay, even though she left at her own request.

Senator Aloysio Nunes Ferreira (SP) and federal deputy Duarte Nogueira (SP), both from PSDB, today asked the Attorney General of the Republic, Roberto Gurgel, to investigate the Minister of the Civil House, Gleisi Hoffmann, and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for suspected crimes of embezzlement and administrative misconduct.

Opposition lawmakers want the two, along with the director-general of Itaipu Binacional, Jorge Samek, to be investigated for suspected irregularities in Gleisi's dismissal from the state-owned company in 2006, on the eve of the start of the election campaign. The minister left Itaipu and launched her candidacy for the Senate. But she received compensation from the state-owned company as if she had been dismissed, as revealed by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.

"Instead of requesting her removal, which would be expected, or rather, the action that should have been taken, Minister Gleisi was dismissed by the other representatives, thus demonstrating a unity of purpose whose final result was damage to the Union's coffers in the amount of more than R$ 40.000,00 (forty thousand reais)," the parliamentarians allege in the representation filed with the Attorney General's Office.

According to them, the minister received payments to which she was not entitled. "Only one conclusion is plausible: the defendants, acting in concert, fabricated Gleisi Hoffmann's dismissal in an effort to improperly benefit her with public funds," they argue. The senator and the congressman want Lula investigated for being responsible for Gleisi's dismissal, as published in the Official Gazette. "The fact is that former President Lula was fully aware of Gleisi's candidacy and, therefore, should not have signed her dismissal unless it was at her request," they state.
