Electoral prosecutor accepts lawsuit to revoke PT's registration.
Another threat to democracy: prosecutor wants to prevent the Workers' Party from participating in elections in Brazil.
From Fórum magazine – Deputy Attorney General for Electoral Affairs Renato Brill de Goés issued a favorable opinion on a lawsuit seeking the cancellation of the registration of the Workers' Party – that is, the dissolution of the PT.
According to Fausto Macedo's column in Estadão, the action is based on testimonies gathered by Operation Lava Jato against the party, which allegedly indicate that the party received illicit funds of foreign origin, thus violating item I of article 28 of the Law of Political Parties.
“Given this context, it is necessary to acknowledge the existence of sufficient evidence that the Workers' Party – PT, the defendant in this case, received, through intermediaries, funds originating from foreign legal entities (Keppel FELS and Toshiba), including for the payment of expenses incurred by the Party itself, demonstrating, in theory, a direct interest of the party institution and not just of one of its leaders, a circumstance that authorizes the continuation of the proceedings regarding the hypothesis of item I of article 28 of the Law of Political Parties, with the commencement of its evidentiary phase,” wrote the deputy prosecutor.
