Initially, there was an expectation that Temer would attend the event to strengthen relations with Japan, which will host the next Olympics, since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be attending the closing ceremony of the Games.

At the opening of Rio 2016, despite speaking for less than ten seconds, Temer was booed by the audience.
