247 - Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira stated on Tuesday (26) that Brazil will not accept any type of negotiation with the United States that involves interference in internal judicial matters. The statement was made during the event The New Global Scenario and the Role of the Private Sector in Brazil-US RelationsThe event took place at the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp). The news was originally published by Agência Brasil.

According to Vieira, Brazil's position is clear: "There is no possibility of any negotiation between the two countries that involves interference in judicial terms. We will continue to resist these pressures while insisting on respect for our institutions and our sovereignty."

Unprecedented tariff hike in Brazil-US relations

The chancellor's reaction refers to the 50% tariff imposed by the United States government on a significant portion of Brazilian products. Vieira emphasized that the measure had never been adopted in the 201 years of trade relations between the two countries and that the decision is directly related to the legal proceedings involving former President Jair Bolsonaro and his main advisors, accused of attempting to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law.

According to the minister, this is a politically motivated and unacceptable action: "This issue is an internal and sovereign matter for Brazil, to be handled within the judicial branch, and there is no possibility of interference from the executive branch in response."

Brazil seeks alternatives in the face of barriers.

Despite the pressure, Vieira emphasized that the Brazilian government will not abandon dialogue with Washington. At the same time, the country is working to diversify partnerships and minimize the effects of the tariff hikes. "We have initiated conversations with other countries affected by the United States' tariff measures. To this end, President Lula has maintained contact, in the last two weeks alone, with leaders from India, China, Mexico, and France, among other countries," he highlighted.

Furthermore, the chancellor pointed out that Brazil intends to advance discussions on a structural reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO). According to him, the idea is to promote "a true refounding of the organization on more modern and flexible bases."

Separate commerce from politics.

Mauro Vieira concluded by emphasizing the need to separate commercial issues from political disputes to avoid even deeper crises. "In our relationship with the United States, we will continue to insist on the need to separate commercial issues from political issues. This is the only possible way for the current situation to find a satisfactory solution," he stated.

With this, the Brazilian government reaffirms its stance of resistance to any attempt at external pressure on the Judiciary, while at the same time seeking to strengthen its presence in multilateral forums and expand its strategic alliances on the global stage.
