Maia does not commit to a deadline for judging Cunha.
The Speaker of the House, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), stated that he intends to start the process of impeaching the suspended deputy Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ) in plenary by Tuesday (9), but did not set a date for the vote; at lunch with leaders this Monday (1st), Maia was urged by the new and old opposition (PSDB, PPS, PT, among others) to schedule the impeachment as soon as possible; "We will work to ensure that it is during the month of August, in a week with a high quorum," he said.
247 - The Speaker of the House, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said he intends to start the process of impeaching suspended deputy Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ) in plenary by Tuesday (9), but did not set a date for the vote.
The idea is to read the case between this Wednesday (3) and Tuesday of next week. After this phase, there are two sessions before the vote is put on the agenda as a priority item. That is, if the reading takes place on Tuesday, the tendency is that the deputies can already decide the future of the PMDB member from Thursday onwards.
During lunch with leaders this Monday (1st), Maia was urged by the new and old opposition (PSDB, PPS, PT, among others) to schedule the impeachment as soon as possible, under penalty of the Chamber losing credibility with public opinion.
The DEM congressman said he will "work" to resolve the issue this month, but did not commit to setting a deadline.
"We will work to ensure that [the impeachment vote] takes place during the month of August, in a week with a high quorum. The second week has a higher quorum, but some deputies are already saying that it's the week of candidate registration. We will wait so as not to give the wrong date and create frustrations," Maia stated.
