Maia: 'I didn't do to them what they did to Dilma'

A guarantor of government stability, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), president of the Chamber of Deputies, complains about the Planalto's hard core for not honoring agreements; "I didn't do to them what they did to Dilma," he stated, referring to the clash between the DEM and PMDB over the dispute for dissident parliamentarians from other parties and over his possible candidacy for President of the Republic; according to Maia, the PMDB's attempt to co-opt parliamentarians targeted by the DEM could result in retaliation, such as voting against projects of interest to Michel Temer's government; political tension tends to grow with the approach of the vote on the second accusation against Temer and further threatens the stability of the government's base.

247 - The Speaker of the House, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), sent a loud and clear message to the core of the PMDB party and to Michel Temer. "My standards are not the same as those who, around the president, orchestrated the impeachment of President Dilma," Maia stated, referring to the clash between the DEM and PMDB parties over the participation of dissident parliamentarians from other parties and regarding his potential candidacy for President of the Republic.

In an interview with the newspaper Valor Econômico, Maia highlighted that rumors that he might run for president originated in the offices and coffee breaks of PMDB members. "I didn't do to them what they did to Dilma. Perhaps that's why these lies were created, to try to create an environment where I was the one who was no good and they were the ones who were good," he said. "Since they did that to Dilma, perhaps they imagined that would be the norm," he added.

According to Maia, the tense climate between the two parties is expected to intensify since the PMDB allegedly broke its commitment and attempted to recruit deputies from other parties who were negotiating their move to the DEM. The DEM, in this case, could retaliate by voting against projects of interest to the Temer government.

The congressman highlighted that he intends to run for reelection in the next elections. "To be president of the Chamber and to be a congressman you need votes, but it's a strong possibility. I think I help Rio more in Brasília."

Regarding the vote on the second complaint filed by the Attorney General's Office against Michel Temer, Maia, however, softened his tone. "A complaint is not a campaign to assume the Presidency. This role, which some would have liked me to have played, I was not in a position to play either in the first case (the first complaint against the PMDB member ended up being dismissed by the Chamber) nor will I be in a position to play in the second," he said.
