The Speaker of the House, Representative Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), reaffirmed this Thursday, the 5th, that the Pension and Labor Reforms should be voted on in the first half of this year.

The congressman is confident that the bills submitted by the Executive branch will be approved even if he is not the chosen candidate in the election for Speaker of the House, scheduled for February 2nd. Maia is not yet an official candidate for the position and says he is still considering the possibility.

"I am confident that, in whatever position I hold from February 3rd onwards, I will be ready to help Brazil, to approve these reforms which, from my point of view, strengthen workers' rights, strengthen families' rights in the long term, and in the short term will provide enormous relief," he declared.

Regarding the Chamber election, Maia reiterated that his candidacy is "maturing" and that, if re-elected, he will not retaliate against the opposition. "The formation of the board of directors does not depend on my candidacy; it is clear that the following day there will be no retaliation against anyone," he said.

Maia made the statement shortly after swearing in substitute deputies Izaque Silva (PSDB-SP) and Yeda Crusius (PSDB-RS), former governor of Rio Grande do Sul. Silva took over from Bruno Covas, the new vice-mayor of São Paulo. Yeda will replace Nelson Marchesan Júnior, who assumed the mayoralty of Porto Alegre (RS).
