Senate Agency - In a lengthy speech this Tuesday (18), Senator Magno Malta (PR-ES) announced in the Plenary that he is a pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. He communicated the delivery of a letter to the Republican Party requesting the right to be the party's candidate in this year's elections. The speech was attended by members of religious entities.

"This is an important day for me. I would say it's a unique day in my life, in my history. What brings me to this podium is that I have never hidden from anyone my dream, my desire to run for President of the Republic," he said.

The senator recalled his work as chairman of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Drug Trafficking and the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Pedophilia.

– I revealed a country that is among the three biggest abusers on the planet. And everything that has progressed since the change to the Statute of Children and Adolescents, I was proud and happy to sign that law! – he pointed out.

He acknowledged the importance of past governments and noted that he supported both of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's elections and Dilma Rousseff's election. Malta said, however, that he wanted to do "what wasn't done" in previous administrations, starting with Fernando Henrique Cardoso, mentioning key issues such as lowering the age of criminal responsibility.

The senator also noted that he has worked with drug addicts for 35 years, expressed his opposition to state tolerance of drug use, stated that the population needs the right to walk the streets without fear of violence, and proposed strengthening border surveillance against arms and drug trafficking.

Magno Malta explained that his proposal to reduce the age of criminal responsibility is not reckless, but rather seeks the genuine rehabilitation and reintegration of minors who commit serious crimes.

"My proposal states the following: any citizen who commits a heinous crime loses their minority status and is brought into adulthood to serve their legal sentences. According to my proposal, the State is obligated to build rehabilitation centers to train champions in high-performance sports for the country. I'm not talking about jail or prison. These boys can be rehabilitated, they can be returned to society, they can bring joy. We can take the rifle from their hands and put a basketball in their place; take the rifle and put a jiu-jitsu belt around their waist; we can put a champion's glove on their hand instead of a pistol," he explained.

Magno Malta also stated that he is ready to debate any topic with the other presidential candidates and asked his party for the right to travel throughout the country to discuss these issues with the public.

In separate remarks, Senators Lobão Filho (PMDB-MA), Eduardo Lopes (PRB-RJ), Eduardo Amorim (PSC-SE), Sérgio Petecão (PSD-AC), Walter Pinheiro (PT-BA), Blairo Maggi (PR-MT), Pedro Taques (PDT-MT), Waldemir Moka (PMDB-MS), Casildo Maldaner (PMDB-SC), and Randolfe Rodrigues (PSOL-AP) highlighted their colleague's courage in seeking the candidacy within a party that is part of the federal government's base and wished him good luck in his endeavor.
