247 - President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will redefine the relationship between Brazil and the United States through environmental issues. As a special guest at COP27 in Egypt, he will meet with John Kerry, head of the US Climate Authority, and will also make two important announcements: the creation of a climate authority in Brazil and a request for Brazil to host COP30 in 2025.

"President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is eagerly awaited at COP27, the UN climate conference taking place in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where political and civil society leaders hope to meet with whoever will assume power in Brazil on January 1, 2023. According to sources within the elected government, one of the most interested parties is John Kerry, the special envoy for climate action for US President Joe Biden, along with representatives from the governments of Germany and China, among others who will participate in the event, which concludes on November 18." Janaína Figueiredo and Sergio Roxo report, journalists from Globo.

"The most important announcement should be the confirmation that, responding to a demand from civil society NGOs, the elected government will propose Brazil as the host of COP30 in 2025. The name of the future Minister of the Environment could also be confirmed, as well as what some in the transition team are already calling the 'Brazilian Kerry,' that is, a special authority to deal with environmental issues," the reporters continue. "Among the environmental proposals presented during the election campaign is the commitment to seek zero deforestation in the Amazon and zero greenhouse gas emissions in the energy matrix. Lula also emphasized, more than once, that he intends to end illegal mining on indigenous lands. The Workers' Party candidate will also create a Ministry for Indigenous Peoples," they highlight.
