"Lula is in good spirits and confident," says his doctor.
Roberto Kalil visited him and said he perceived serenity in the former president.
Dr. Roberto Kalil, director of cardiology at the Sírio-Libanês hospital and personal physician to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stayed for half an hour in Lula's apartment in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo. Upon leaving, he said that Lula was in extremely good spirits and confident.
"At no point did I perceive that he was afraid of anything. He is a human being, before being the public figure he is. He is calm. Of course, he gets scared," the doctor stated. According to Kalil, Lula will spend all of Monday and sleep at the Sírio-Libanês hospital, where he will undergo his first chemotherapy session. Lula is expected to arrive at Sírio-Libanês at 9:00 AM this Monday.
Asked about the possibility of also undergoing radiotherapy treatment, Kalil stated that the first procedure will be chemotherapy, as determined by the oncologists. However, the treatment plan will be drawn up tomorrow.
Kalil said he couldn't assess whether the illness would hinder Lula's participation in the PT's political maneuvering. "I don't know, our conversation here is medical. Treatment starts tomorrow, so it will depend on the treatment." But he stated that, according to the oncologists treating the former president, there is no risk of Lula losing his voice. Lula is a little hoarse, as Kalil reported, mainly due to the effects of the tests.
The results of the biopsy performed on the former president's larynx are expected in a few days. The material will be sent abroad, which, according to Kalil, is a routine procedure. The biopsy results will provide a clearer picture of the tumor's aggressiveness.
The decision to opt for chemotherapy instead of surgery was made by the doctors, according to Kalil. "Lula has immense respect for medical conduct, as he always has, and this time would be no different."
The former president spends the day in his apartment in São Bernardo, accompanied by his wife Marisa Letícia and by his children and grandchildren.
