247 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dismissed General Júlio César de Arruda from his position as commander of the Army this Saturday.

The replacement will be the current military commander of the Southeast region, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva.

Júlio César de Arruda temporarily assumed command of the Army on December 30 of last year, during the Jair Bolsonaro administration.

It was an agreement with Lula's transition team that the change of leadership would occur before the new government takes office.

Last Wednesday, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva delivered a forceful speech defending the election results that led to Lula's presidency.

Tomás Paiva was chief of staff to General Eduardo Villas Bôas, who commanded the Army during the Dilma Rousseff and Temer administrations, and published the tweets in April 2018 to pressure the Supreme Military Court in the habeas corpus trial that would prevent Lula's imprisonment.
