247 - After Senator Renan Calheiros was announced as the rapporteur for the bill, approved in the Chamber of Deputies, regarding income tax exemption for those earning up to 5 reais per month, the rapporteur in the Lower House, Arthur Lira, said that any kind of "political maneuvering" surrounding the text should be avoided.

The statement on Tuesday (7) comes after disagreements between Lira and Calheiros. The senator told journalists earlier that the proceedings in the Chamber served as an instrument of blackmail against the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He also described the proceedings in the House as "atypical".

Lira responded on social media: "May the income tax bill be reported responsibly in the Senate. The text that is ready was built with much work and dialogue, including with the government, and approved unanimously in the Chamber within the deadline. Let's not play politics with such an important issue."
