Janot asks the Supreme Court to dismiss the investigation into Renan, Jucá, and Sarney.
Brazil's Attorney General, Rodrigo Janot, has asked the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to dismiss the investigation opened by the Court into the alleged attempt by Senators Romero Jucá (PMDB-RR) and Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) and former Senator José Sarney to obstruct the Lava Jato Operation investigations. Janot concluded that the recorded conversations between the three politicians and the former president of Transpetro, Sérgio Machado, did not constitute a crime.
Brazil Agency - Brazil's Attorney General, Rodrigo Janot, has asked the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to dismiss the inquiry opened by the Court to investigate the alleged attempt by Senators Romero Jucá (PMDB-RR) and Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL) and former Senator José Sarney to obstruct the investigations of Operation Lava Jato.
In July, the Federal Police (PF) also requested the dismissal of the investigation due to insufficient evidence. The PF concluded that the recorded conversations between the three politicians and the former president of Transpetro, Sérgio Machado, did not constitute a crime.
Renan, Jucá, and Sarney are responding to an inquiry in which they were accused by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) of obstructing the Lava Jato investigation by attempting to block or hinder the operation's investigations. Opened in February, the inquiry against the politicians is based on the plea bargain agreement of Sérgio Machado and recorded conversations between him and the other individuals involved.
The recordings were released last year after the confidentiality of Machado's testimony was lifted. In one of the conversations, Romero Jucá mentions an alleged "national agreement" to "stop the bleeding."
It will be up to Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin, the case's rapporteur, to have the final say on whether to dismiss the case.
The decision taken today by the Attorney General's Office is not related to the complaint for the crime of criminal organization presented on Friday (8) by Janot against the PMDB senators Renan Calheiros (AL), Romero Jucá (RR), Edison Lobão (MA), Valdir Raupp (RO) and Jader Barbalho (PA), in addition to former senator José Sarney.
The full text of the complaint, which has not yet been released, is related to the plea bargain testimony of the former director of Transpetro, Sérgio Machado.
