Franklin demonstrates strength in the EBC succession.
Former Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication, Franklin left the government along with former President Lula, but remains a reference in the field of Communication. This time, he was decisive in the choice of Nelson Breve to take over Empresa Brasil de Comunicação in place of Tereza Cruvinel.
Evam Sena_247, in Brasília – Empresa Brasil de Comunicação, responsible for TV Brasil and public radio, television and internet channels, completed four years this Thursday, also ending the term of journalist Tereza Cruvinel as president. The choice of her successor, former Press Secretary of the Presidency Nelson Breve, should be made official next Monday, before President Dilma Rousseff travels to France.
The race for the presidency of EBC (Brazilian Communication Company) opened up a dispute not only within the government's communications sector, but also within the PT (Workers' Party). The one who emerged strengthened was former minister Franklin Martins, who nominated Nelson Breve, currently the EBC's Superintendent of Information Technology and former Press Secretary in Lula's government. A former Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication, Franklin left the government along with former President Lula, but remains a leading figure in communications matters.
A faction within the PT (Workers' Party) advocated for the reappointment of Tereza Cruvinel, arguing that her departure from the presidency was an admission of mismanagement. According to some PT members, Tereza played a crucial role not only in the political maneuvering that led to the approval of the creation of EBC (Brazilian Communication Company) in Congress, but also in sustaining the public company during its early years.
Another faction of the PT, led by Franklin Martins, was lobbying for Nelson Breve. Tereza's version, who was campaigning to remain in office, is that Dilma invited her, but she refused and advocated for renewal, since she already knew of Breve's candidacy.
In fact, Tereza's situation was not good among the EBC board members, who do not have the power to elect, but can dismiss, directors. They openly worked against the journalist's reappointment and, in August, even openly considered requesting her impeachment.
Even with the strengthening of Nelson Breve's name, the board members planned to launch their own candidate for the presidency of EBC, Professor Murilo César Ramos from the University of Brasília (UnB), whose name is frequently mentioned whenever news of succession in the Communications sector of the government emerges. However, the proposal was never presented. The board has been working for greater independence from the government and against political interference in the company's management.
Appointed by Lula with Franklin's approval, Tereza Cruvinel's tenure was marked by controversy. Since 2008, at least three directors and a news anchor have resigned, complaining of political interference or authoritarianism.
Last year, defeated presidential candidate José Serra (PSDB) accused the broadcaster of favoring Dilma, after a TV Brasil reporter asked if, as she had been informed by anonymous sources, he would abolish the Bolsa Família program. The episode led the Board of Trustees to demand the publication of a style guide.
