247 Former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, accused by his former lover of owning an apartment on one of Paris's most expensive avenues, disrespected the memory of former Peruvian President Alan García, who committed suicide this Wednesday, the 17th, to avoid dishonor. He shot himself in the head shortly before being arrested in connection with the Lava Jato corruption investigation in Peru.
"Corruption melts democracy. Alan Garcia, accused, kills himself. He was my student in France. A populist, he couldn't resist the corrupting tide. Either we restore simplicity in living and respect for the law in governing, or there is a risk of dictators deceiving the people with misleading moral speeches," the politician posted on Twitter.
The Lawfare Institute, launched in London in 2018 by lawyers Cristiano and Valeska Zanin and Rafael Valim, who are defending former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has produced a petition signed by judges, lawyers, jurists, and former foreign ministers from various countries, criticizing the judicial persecution against Alan García.
"The coercive power of the legal process should never be used or manipulated to secure political gains. Precautionary measures that restrict freedom should only be used in accordance with due process and with robust safeguards," the text states.
Corruption is melting away democracy. Alan Garcia, accused of corruption, committed suicide. He was my student in France. A populist, he couldn't withstand the corrupting tide. Either we restore simplicity in living and respect for the law in governing, or there is a risk of dictators deceiving the people with misleading moral speeches.
