Former right-hand man of Edir Macedo, Bishop Romualdo Panceiro declares support for Lula: 'It's from God'

Panceiro, who broke with Edir Macedo in 2020, does not believe the narrative promoted by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) that Christians cannot be left-wing: "Years ago, everyone was with Lula."

247 - Romualdo Panceiro, former number 2 of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) and considered, in the past, a potential successor to Bishop Edir Macedo, said that Lula "is a nice person, a good person, a person of God."

Panceiro, who broke with Edir Macedo in 2020, said in an interview with newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, which states that negative comments against Lula should not be taken seriously. "One should not take so seriously the evangelical leader who speaks the opposite today."

The dissenting bishop from the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) recalled that the relationship between the Workers' Party (PT) and the church is long-standing. "Just go back to 2014, to the inauguration of the Temple of Solomon, a biblically inspired building erected by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in São Paulo during Dilma Rousseff's first term. Everyone from the PT was there."

According to Panceiro, in the narrative war with the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD), the winner is whoever can offer the biggest piece of bread. "What happens is this: I want a piece of bread, who can give me a bigger piece? Bolsonaro? Then I'll take him."

Panceiro adds that the "unrestricted adherence of prominent pastors to Bolsonarism" boils down to political interest. "What do these people want? Power, influence. At stake are funds that the government can give to favor broadcasters, etc. Today, the funds—which we call bread—are perhaps distributed unfairly. A larger piece for so-and-so and a smaller one for so-and-so. During Lula's time, the piece of bread was distributed fairly," he pointed out.

The former bishop of the Universal Church doesn't believe the narrative promoted by the IURD (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God) that Christians cannot be left-wing. "Did it really take all these years for them to reach this conclusion? Years ago, everyone was with Lula. What did he do to make them reach this conclusion?" he said.
