"The state cannot have a religion and the church cannot have a political party," says Lula.

"All religions will be deeply respected. That's what the Constitution says," the former president stated amidst attempts by Bolsonaro to pit him against evangelicals.

247 - Amid attempts by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to turn evangelicals - a group in which he still retains some support - against former president Lula (PT), the PT member used his speech during a meeting with forest peoples in Belém (PA) this Friday (2) to guarantee unrestricted respect for all religions.

He stated that, as stipulated by the Constitution, the State will remain secular during his potential third term, without interference from churches in the government. The Workers' Party member also declared that churches "cannot have a political party." Currently, there is an "evangelical caucus" in the National Congress.

"The Brazilian state is secular, and I believe that just as the state cannot have a religion, the church cannot have a political party. So I want you to know that all religions will be deeply respected. Everyone has the right to believe in their God, and everyone has the right to profess their faith. Therefore, there will be respect for all religions, for religions of African origin, for evangelicals, for Catholics, Jews, Muslims. Everyone will be respected, because that is what is in the Brazilian Constitution," he said.

He also made a point of mentioning measures from his previous administrations that demonstrate his respect for religious beliefs. "If you don't know, it was during my administration that we created the Law of Religious Freedom. It was during my administration that we created the March for Jesus. It was during my administration that we created the greatest degree of freedom to profess the religion that each person desires."
