(Reuters) - The Federal Police are executing 29 search and seizure warrants in five states and the Federal District as part of an investigation opened by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to investigate attacks against the court and its justices, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the Federal Police, the warrants are being served in the federal capital and in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Paraná, and Santa Catarina.

The investigations were ordered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court, who is presiding over the inquiry, opened by the court's president, Dias Toffoli, in March of last year to investigate fake news and threats against justices of the court. The opening of the inquiry on Toffoli's initiative was criticized, since it is common for inquiries to be opened by the Judiciary in response to requests from other bodies.

The Federal Police did not provide details about the warrants served on Wednesday. The Supreme Court, when contacted, has not yet commented. The investigation is under judicial secrecy.
