247 - In just two months as acting vice-president, Michel Temer met at least five times privately with individuals under investigation in the Federal Police's Operation Lava Jato. Among the politicians Temer met with were the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL), and the suspended congressman and former president of the Chamber of Deputies, Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ).
According to the UOL news portal, the survey excluded public events where the individuals under investigation were also present, as well as meetings attended by people who were not targets of the operation.
In this vein, the meeting that had the most repercussions was the private conversation that Temer held with Cunha at the Jaburu Palace, the official residence of the vice-presidency, in Brasília. The meeting was not on Temer's official agenda and took place on the evening of June 26th.
Although the content of the conversation was not revealed, sources said that the debate between them was about Cunha's succession in the Chamber of Deputies.
Temer also held two private meetings with Senator Renan Calheiros, who is the subject of eight investigations related to Lava Jato. The Attorney General of the Republic, Rodrigo Janot, even requested Renan's arrest after audios made by the former president of Transpetro, Sérgio Machado, were released. The recordings show Renan saying he worked to prevent Janot from being re-elected. The arrest request, however, was rejected.
Temer also held a conversation with former president José Sarney (PMDB-AP), whose arrest warrant, requested by the PR party, was also denied by the courts. Sarney is cited by Machado as a beneficiary of funds diverted from Petrobras contracts.
Temer also met with Senator Ciro Nogueira from Piauí, president of the PP party, who is under investigation for passive corruption, money laundering, and forming a criminal organization.
The Presidential Palace, in a statement, informed that "all meetings of the interim President of the Republic, Michel Temer, with authorities are of an institutional nature and are recorded in the official agenda."
