Agency Brazil - The Minister of Mines and Energy, Edison Lobão, informed today (19) during an event parallel to the United Nations Conference, Rio+20, that President Dilma Rousseff wants him back in the Senate and as president of the House.

"I left my Senate seat and would return as president. Of course, that's positive," he said before stating that he would only leave the ministry on Dilma's orders. Lobão participated this morning in the opening of the Renewable Energies for Sustainable Development event at Forte de Copacabana, in the southern zone of Rio.

A minister since 2008, during Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration, Lobão is a senator for the PMDB party. The current president of the Senate, José Sarney (PMDB-AP), ends his term in February 2013. The PMDB, the largest party in the Senate, will be responsible for choosing Sarney's successor, who has stated in several pronouncements that this will be his last term.

The internal regulations stipulate that the party with the largest number of senators elected in the last election gets to choose the position. The PMDB has 20 senators.

In general, the PMDB party caucus postpones internal discussions about the nominee for Senate president until early December. When they fail to achieve unanimity within the caucus, the PMDB senators put the names presented as candidates to a vote.
