Dirceu says that the PT (Workers' Party) is experiencing a historic moment and warns of US aggression against Brazilian sovereignty.
In an interview with Focus Brasil, the former minister defends a broad front in defense of democracy and criticizes the Trump administration's offensive against Brazil.
247 - In an interview with the channel Focus Brazil, the former minister Dirceu He assessed the recent national meeting of the PT (Workers' Party) as a historic milestone for the party and for Brazilian politics. According to him, the event reflected unity around an agenda focused on defending democracy and sovereignty, in a scenario of increasing external pressure. "This meeting will be known as historic because of the political moment in which it was held, in the face of the aggression against our sovereignty and democracy by the Trump administration," he stated.
Dirceu highlighted the importance of the ongoing tax reform, emphasizing that it represents more than a simple fiscal restructuring. "This brings to the forefront the awareness of the vast majority of Brazilians that Brazil needs a social revolution, which begins with a tax revolution," he said. According to him, the change corrects distortions in a system that has historically burdened wages more than income and wealth.
The former minister recalled the period of political persecution between 2013 and 2019, marked by the coup against President Dilma Rousseff and the unjust imprisonment of President Lula. “We can never forget that. There came a point when we couldn't go out in the streets with our symbols, and they almost revoked our party's registration,” he declared. He emphasized the importance of the resistance, which culminated in the “Free Lula” movement and the victory of the broad front in 2022.
Brazil as a power and a target of the US.
Dirceu also addressed Brazil's strategic position on the international stage. "Brazil is a power. It is one of the largest and richest countries in the world, with food and energy sovereignty. This particularly bothers the United States," he said. He harshly criticized Washington's stance, stating that the country "is no longer a democracy, but a plutocracy heading towards an authoritarian regime at the hands of Trump."
Regarding the recent acts of violence in Congress, Dirceu was categorical: “We must be aware that they are coup plotters and use violence and hatred. That was an attempt to prevent the functioning of parliament, which is a constitutional crime.” He also recalled the “green-yellow dagger plan,” which called for the assassination of Lula, Geraldo Alckmin, and Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
Religion and politics
When questioned about the relationship between religion and politics, especially in a context of growing evangelical influence, Dirceu defended the maintenance of a secular state. “The PT [Workers' Party] shouldn't mix religion with politics. The problem isn't faith, but the conservative and reactionary agenda of certain sectors. Brazil is a Christian nation, but millions of Brazilians are not Christians. We cannot accept theocracy,” he stated.
For Dirceu, the PT's challenge is to broaden alliances and confront the external offensive. He advocated for structural reforms and the strengthening of the broad front. “There has never been a more favorable political situation for us than this. We need radical changes within the party and cohesion in defense of sovereignty, democracy, and social rights,” he concluded. Check it out:
