Brasilia – President Dilma Rousseff said this Wednesday (27), during the 5th BRICS Summit (a bloc formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in Durban, South Africa, that the goal of all is to overcome poverty. She recalled, however, that this objective is only the beginning of a joint effort that includes a series of actions for the development of the countries that make up the group. Dilma stressed that Brazil has made progress, but that the commitment is maintained by the government.

"Overcoming poverty is only the end of the beginning," the president emphasized at the opening of the summit. She reiterated that, as a result of the economic and social development models adopted in Brazil, the country managed to achieve the Millennium Development Goal, set by the United Nations, of exceeding a minimum income of US$1,25 per person.

The president also said that the public policies implemented in Brazil aim to transform citizens into consumers, expanding the domestic market and opportunities. Dilma recalled that the BRICS countries may have "different histories," but they share similar goals. "It is the responsibility to the world that is emerging," she added.

Dilma reiterated that the BRICS countries are increasingly gaining ground on the international stage. "We are supported by a vision of the future in which our countries will play an increasingly relevant role."

Before the summit opened, Dilma participated in a breakfast with the BRICS leaders - Presidents Jacob Zuma (South Africa), the host, Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Xi Jinping (China), as well as the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.

In 2012, the combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the BRICS countries reached US$15 trillion. According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the BRICS accounted for 21% of the world's GDP in nominal terms and 27% of global GDP when compared to purchasing power parity.

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa together occupy 26% of the planet's land area, are home to 42% of the world's population, and account for 45% of the global workforce.
