Dilma will pay tribute to Campos on a TV program.
A film to be broadcast on TV during President Dilma Rousseff's free election program will include a brief tribute to former Pernambuco governor Eduardo Campos, who died yesterday in a tragic plane crash and was to run for president against her; the message is expected to be recorded by former president Lula, who was Campos' political mentor and friend and was deeply saddened by his death.
247 - One of the campaign ads for President Dilma Rousseff, the PT candidate seeking re-election, will include a tribute to Eduardo Campos, who was running for president with the PSB. The free election broadcast time begins next Tuesday, the 19th. Campos suffered a tragic death yesterday morning after the plane he was in crashed off the coast of São Paulo. None of the seven people on board survived.
The message is expected to be recorded by former president Lula, according to a report in Folha de S. Paulo. The Workers' Party leader was Campos' political godfather, a friend of his, and was deeply shaken by the death. He was recording messages for Dilma's campaign when he learned of the accident on Wednesday. The former president canceled the filming and all his schedule for the next few days to attend the wake in Recife, which is expected to take place over the weekend.
Visibly emotional, President Dilma also made a statement to comment on Campos' death. "Brazil is in mourning," said the president. "Brazil has lost a young leader with an extremely promising future ahead of him. A man who could have reached the highest positions in the country," added the president, saying that "we were affected by the fragility of life, but also by the strength of people's example."
Read below the statement of condolence released by Lula and the Presidential Palace, before Dilma's speech:
Like all Brazilians, I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Eduardo Campos. A great friend and colleague.
I met Eduardo through his grandfather, Miguel Arraes, a memorable leader of popular causes in Pernambuco and Brazil.
The country has lost a public figure of rare and extraordinary quality. I had the pleasure of counting on his intelligence and dedication during the years he served as our Minister of Science and Technology. Throughout his life, Eduardo fought to make Brazil a more just and dignified country.
Affection, respect, and mutual admiration have always been present in our relationship.
In this moment of grief, Marisa and I extend our deepest sympathies to his mother, Ana Arraes, his wife, Renata, his children, and all his family, friends, and colleagues.
We also extend our condolences to the families of the team members and crew members who perished in this terrible accident.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
Note from the Presidential Palace
All of Brazil is in mourning. Today we lost a great Brazilian, Eduardo Campos. We lost a great comrade.
Grandson of Miguel Arraes, an example of a democrat for my generation, Eduardo was a great political leader. From a young age, he fought the good fight of politics, serving as a federal deputy, minister, and governor of Pernambuco twice.
Eduardo and I had a long working relationship during Lula's government, in the 2006 and 2010 campaigns, and during my own presidency.
We were together for the last time at the funeral of our beloved Ariano Suassuna. We talked as friends. We always knew that our eventual political differences would always be less significant than the mutual respect that characterized our relationship.
He was an exemplary father and husband. In this moment of profound grief, my thoughts are with Renata, his lifelong companion, and their beloved children. I am deeply saddened.
I have decreed three days of official mourning in honor of Eduardo Campos' memory. I have ordered the suspension of my campaign for three days.
The interview that was to be given to Jornal Nacional has been cancelled.
During the first three years of Dilma's government, Campos' PSB party was one of the government's main allies.
