Brasilia - The family of former congressman José Genoino, convicted in Criminal Action 470, the mensalão scandal trial, published on the page created to raise donations the statement of payment of the fine imposed on the former president of the PT (Workers' Party). With the document, family members thanked the more than 2 people who helped in the online campaign and informed that the amount exceeded by more than R$ 90 the amount charged by the court.
According to the statement released on the website, part of the surplus money was used to pay tax charges in different states of the federation. "Therefore, we do not yet have a precise calculation of the amount that will remain after all this processing, but we will certainly continue this wave of solidarity with the colleagues unjustly convicted in Criminal Action 470," they emphasize in the text.
The statement shows a payment of R$ 667.513,92 which, according to family and friends, were "unfairly levied taxes" on José Genoino. "We have a long road ahead in defending Genoino's innocence and the truth of his story. Certainly, it hasn't been easy taking each step on this tortuous path, but with these small and large gestures, you have certainly helped us to have the strength to move forward," the family expressed their gratitude.
Today (21), the coordinator of the PT's legal area, Marco Aurélio Carvalho, informed that the excess amount, after taxes, should be less than R$ 40 thousand. He added that there is no guidance on the destination of this amount. Carvalho also said that the families of José Dirceu, Delúbio Soares and João Paulo Cunha, indicated that they will follow the same steps as Genoino and create fundraising campaigns on the internet. "The families will start the campaigns from the deadline established by law. The next one will be Delúbio [Soares]".
The Criminal Enforcement Court (VEP) published yesterday (20) the certificate of collection of the fine imposed on the former treasurer of the party, setting a deadline of 10 days for payment of the amount. "The family is already organizing the website which should go live in the next few hours," Carvalho assured. According to him, the next campaign should be promoted to raise donations for former minister José Dirceu, who has not yet been notified about the collection.
The information has not been confirmed by officials from the defense offices of José Dirceu and Delúbio Soares. Agência Brasil was unable to contact the lawyer for João Paulo Cunha, who is still awaiting an arrest warrant from the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
The national president of the PT (Workers' Party), Rui Falcão, who supported the online campaign promoted by Genoino's family, also encouraged party members to collaborate with other convicts in the case. "Since the PT, by law, cannot use its own resources or those from the Party Fund, we propose this wave of solidarity which should also extend to comrades José Dirceu, Delúbio Soares, and João Paulo Cunha," he declared.
