247 - The PSDB presidential candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, was unable to deny the party's participation in the government of Michel Temer, the most unpopular since the redemocratization. The party holds the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Senator Aloysio Nunes (SP).
"[The PSDB] voted during the serious crisis the country was in. It understood—and it was perfectly constitutional—the impeachment. Having voted for impeachment, it had a responsibility to the new government. It doesn't need to participate, to have minister A, B, C, or D," the former governor of São Paulo and national president of the party told Band News.
Last year, Alckmin did not publicly act in favor of Temer on the two occasions when the PMDB member was indicted by the Attorney General's Office. Commenting on the Chamber's vote to accept the indictment, the PSDB member stated that he supports a change in legislation so that the Legislature does not have to vote on the continuation of investigations against the President of the Republic, as happens with state and municipal governments. On the other hand, the head of the Executive branch would no longer need to be removed from office if indicted by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
"I argue that there's no need for authorization or removal from office. Removal is only necessary if there's a conviction. If there's a majority, there won't be any investigation for two years. On the other hand, it makes no sense to remove someone for six months, sometimes based on a complaint that turns out to be false," he added.
