Aécio confirms PSDB's support for Rodrigo Maia.
The president of the PSDB party said this morning that his party will support Congressman Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ) in the race for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies; "PSDB and PSB will officially announce Rodrigo Maia's candidacy. This gives him a head start in the first round with around 120 votes. He is a strong candidate for the second round," he stated; Aécio affirmed that at the moment the most important thing for the PSDB is to elect "someone committed to governability and reforms."
247 - The national president of the PSDB party, Senator Aécio Neves (MG), said that his party will support Congressman Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ) in the race for the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies. "PSDB and PSB will officially endorse Rodrigo Maia's candidacy. This gives him a head start in the first round with around 120 votes. He is a strong candidate for the second round," said the politician in an interview with Rádio Jovem Pan.
"Today, in addition to the excessive number of candidates, we have three blocs that have been consolidating through internal movements. One is the Centrão, which supported the Dilma government, but which ultimately voted for impeachment at the end of her term. The most visible member of this group is Rogério Rosso. On the other hand, you have the candidacy of the former opposition, and with great effort we managed to unite the PSDB, DEM, PPS, and PSB parties behind a single candidacy, that of Rodrigo Maia. The third force comes from Marcelo Castro, a former minister under President Dilma, who was an alternative source of votes for those who supported the Dilma government," Aécio observed.
The senator from the PSDB party also justified the lack of a PSDB candidate to run for the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies by acknowledging that "the PSDB alone would not have a chance of being elected. I think we played the right game. We will unite our base. We wanted a candidacy that reflected our image, and this would have to emerge with the combined forces of the former opposition (...) We are thinking about the PSDB candidacy for February," he said, referring to the end of the interim term and the holding of new elections for the position.
Aécio stated that at the moment the most important thing for the PSDB is to elect "someone committed to governability and reforms," referring to the pension, labor, political, and state reform projects.
