60% of politicians use prostitutes, says Wyllys.
Brazilian congressman Jean Wyllys (PSOL-RJ) has introduced a bill in the Chamber of Deputies to regulate the profession of prostitutes in the country. "I would say that 60% of the male population in the National Congress uses the services of prostitutes, so I think these guys will want to use this service in safer environments," he argues.
247 - No one understands the importance of legalizing prostitution better than a member of parliament. That's what federal deputy Jean Wyllys (PSol-RJ) implied when he presented a bill in the Chamber of Deputies addressing the issue. interview given to the IG portalThe congressman defended the bill: "Prostitutes, although stigmatized and marginalized, are a less hated category than homosexuals. And there's another factor, I would say that 60% of the male population of the National Congress uses the services of prostitutes, so I think these guys will want to use this service in safer environments."
Wyllys expects the proposal to be approved before the 2014 World Cup. "The project is urgent, especially on the eve of major events (...) and we're not going to be naive enough to think that tourists won't demand this sexual service. So, prostitutes need a safe environment to provide this service," said the congressman, who is the second parliamentarian to attempt something of this kind. In 2003, then-congressman Fernando Gabeira (PV-RJ) had filed a similar proposal, which ended up being shelved.
If approved, the bill guarantees prostitutes access to healthcare, labor rights, public safety, and, according to Wyllys, dignity. The congressman believes the measure would help combat sexual exploitation, as it provides for the inspection of brothels and state control over the service. The 'Gabriela Leite' Law (named after the activist for sex workers' rights since 1979, founder of the Daspu brand and president of the NGO Davida) would allow prostitutes to work autonomously or in cooperatives and would entitle them to a special retirement after 25 years of service.
