Sales of electric and hybrid cars grow by almost 80%.
In January of this year, 4.503 electrified cars were registered, 19% less than in December 2022. Even with the drop, this was the highest historical value for the first month of the year, according to data from ABVE (Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles).

In this sense, the numbers are conclusive: compared to January 2022, the increase in vehicle registrations was 76%, and compared to the same period in 2021, the growth in sales was 241%. December of last year shows the second-best result in the historical series of sales of this type of vehicle.
Comparing the last few years, the sustained growth in sales of electric and hybrid cars in Brazil is evident. In 2020, 19,745 units were registered. The following year, the segment jumped by 77%, closing 2021 with 34.990 new units sold. In 2022, the increase was slightly smaller, only 41% compared to the previous period, but it still represents a total of 49.245 units sold between January and December of last year.
Among electric vehicles, the best-selling are hybrid cars (HEVs), those that do not need to be plugged in, with a 45% market share. In January, 2.041 hybrid units were sold, including 1.541 flex-fuel HEVs and 500 gasoline-powered HEVs.
At the same time, 1.707 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) were sold, representing 45% of the market, while only 755 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) were registered during this period, or 17% market share.

However, even with this steady increase in the sale of electrified vehicles (hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric cars), the percentage of market share in the overall market is still low. In January, out of the 130.460 units registered according to Fenabrave (National Federation of Motor Vehicle DistributionOf these, only 4.503 were vehicles in this segment, as mentioned above, representing just 3,4% of the total market share.
Compared to vehicle sales in January 2022, we can see an increase of 1,3 percentage points; at the beginning of last year, the market share was only 2%. Based on the data analysis, it is expected that by the end of the year or at the latest during 2024, the electric vehicle segment will reach a 5% share of total car sales.
