The origins of violence. Savagery arose with the sedentarization of communities.

The origins of violence. Savagery arose with the sedentarization of communities.

Our image of prehistoric humans as savage and warlike, which persists to this day, is actually a myth, created in the second half of the 19th century. Archaeological research shows that, in fact, collective violence arose with the sedentarization of communities and the transition from a predatory economy to a productive one.

Knowing when to give up. Learn to recognize when it's time to stop.

Life is not a sprint, but a race of endurance. This means that to go further and in better shape, it's necessary to maintain a certain balance: knowing when it's time to pick up the pace and when it's necessary to slow down or even stop to recover strength. However, the truth is that maintaining this balance is difficult, especially when emotions are involved. At the end of the article, a powerful short film offers one of life's most important lessons: knowing when to give up.

The press and politics. Did Trump lose the election because of Fox News?

By all indications, we are facing yet another contentious divorce for Donald Trump. Nothing, in essence, particularly unusual for a President who, according to the New Yorker magazine, has managed to survive, throughout his 74 years of life, "an impeachment, two divorces, six bankruptcies, twenty-six accusations of sexual harassment and approximately four thousand lawsuits." In the opening photo, Donald Trump (left) and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Europa. Jupiter's fluorescent moon.

Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, has fascinating characteristics. It is actually an immense ball of water, contained within a very thick ice crust. Computer simulations of the possible interactions of energy fields between Jupiter and this moon reveal that Europa's landscape could be permanently illuminated by fluorescent lights and colors. The opening illustration shows some of the geysers on Europa's surface. In the background, the giant planet Jupiter.

Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States, will bring his two dogs to the Oval Office. Aside from Donald Trump – who doesn't have any pets – almost all of his predecessors had animals at home. And not just domestic ones. The official presidential residence has been home to, in addition to dogs and cats, horses and birds, and even bears, a tiger and several crocodiles. Not to mention President Roosevelt's one-legged rooster.

The best friend? A group of friends.

The best friend? A group of friends.

In life's difficult moments, the presence of a friend can be a help. But having a close-knit group of friends (or family) is even more helpful. Even when the group is small, but close-knit, it provides more support than having a multitude of friends who don't see each other often. This is explained by research from Ohio State University on the benefits of friendship.

Black market for works of art. Where art has its value.

Edvard Munch's The Scream, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Claude Monet's Seascape, Pablo Picasso's The Dance, and Salvador Dalí's Two Balconies are just the most famous examples. The great similarity between these paintings is the fact that their originals have already been stolen. Crimes of this type are far from uncommon; they have occurred for centuries and are not limited to paintings. It is estimated that the black market for works of art moves billions of dollars a year, and that its importance is increasing.

Pope Francis speaks: Our moral imperative to act on climate change and three lines of action.

The global climate crisis will demand that we all transform our way of acting, says His Holiness Pope Francis (*). Delivering a visionary TED talk in Vatican City, the spiritual leader proposes three lines of action to address the growing global problems linked to the environment and economic inequalities, showing how we can all work together, across all religions and societies, to protect the Earth and promote dignity for all. “The future is built today,” he says. “And it is not built in isolation, but rather in community and in harmony.”

Creatures of the eternal night. They live in darkness, but have their own light.

Spiny lobsters, neon squid, sea butterflies: nighttime images reveal multicolored creatures that make up a "biological soup" in the dark depths of the Pacific Ocean. Professional photographer Jeff Milisen, 37, took nighttime photos of various types of marine life off the island of Kona, Hawaii. He discovered a series of colorful, many of them luminous, and little-known creatures.
