247 - State Representative Zohran Mamdani was officially declared the winner of the Democratic Party primaries for Mayor of New York City on Tuesday (1st), according to information from the city's Election Board published by the international press.

At 33 years old, the socialist politician — who until a few months ago was virtually unknown — defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo by a margin of 12 percentage points, consolidating his lead among progressive voters and expanding his global visibility.

According to the final figures released by the electoral body, Mamdani obtained 56% of the vote against 44% for Cuomo, the 67-year-old veteran who governed the state of New York He ran for three terms and conceded defeat on the night of the vote, held on June 24. The primary voting system allows voters to rank up to five candidates in order of preference. In the first round, Mamdani had led with 43,5%, followed by Cuomo, who obtained 36,5%.

Upon confirming his victory, the state congressman thanked his supporters: “I am honored by the support of more than 545.000 New Yorkers who voted for our campaign and I am thrilled to expand this coalition” to “put workers first.”

An unlikely candidacy that became a phenomenon.

Born in Uganda and a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2018, Mamdani is a Muslim, an outspoken critic of Israeli politics, and a defender of popular causes such as free public transportation and rent freezes. His meteoric rise reveals a reconfiguration in the internal disputes of the Democratic Party, which has been fractured since the victory of... Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential elections. Now in his second term, the Republican president has directly impacted the course of local politics, including in the nation's most populous city.

Mamdani invested in a campaign strategy heavily supported by social media, with high-impact videos, accessible language, and door-to-door mobilization conducted by a broad network of volunteers. The proposal to universalize free childcare and strengthen the working class resonated with marginalized sectors of the New York population, especially among young people, immigrants, and precarious workers.

An unpredictable duel ahead.

Zohran Mamdani's next challenge will be to face the current mayor of New YorkEric Adams is running in the municipal elections in November. Despite being a Democrat, Adams decided to run as an independent candidate after breaking with the party and aligning himself with President Trump—a move that occurred amidst corruption investigations against his administration.

Besides Adams, Republican Curtis Sliwa, former prosecutor Jim Walden, and possibly Cuomo himself, who has left open the possibility of an independent candidacy, are also in the running.

Mamdani's trajectory, marked by immigrant origins, grassroots engagement, and criticism of the political establishment, challenges the traditional arrangements of New York politics. His presence in the second round represents, for many, a rare possibility of concrete change in a metropolis historically governed by political and economic elites linked to the center of the Democratic Party.
