247 - The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) announced this Tuesday (30) the unilateral termination of its academic agreement with the Technion Institute of Technology, in Israel. The agreement provided for cooperation in research, exchange of professors and mobility of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

According to information published by Agency BrazilThe break was formalized in a document in which Unicamp states that "violations of human rights and the dignity of the Palestinian population have become an unacceptable constant." The measure reflects the university's institutional position regarding the genocide perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Rector Paulo Cesar Montagner emphasized that the decision represents a continuation of Unicamp's previous pronouncements on the subject. "We had already positioned ourselves against the situation in Gaza on two other occasions, and the break reaffirms our stance against the genocide of the Palestinian population," he declared.

Montagner also emphasized that the measure is in line with the Brazilian government's stance, which condemns Israel's actions in the region, and follows similar movements by international universities that have criticized the Israeli offensive.

Impacts of the decision

The agreement with Technion included joint scientific and technological research projects, as well as partnerships for the exchange of professors, researchers, and students. With the termination, these activities are suspended.

The Israeli Embassy in Brazil was contacted for comment on the decision, but has not yet issued an official statement. The space remains open for comment.

Unicamp's decision comes amid growing international condemnation of the genocide in Gaza and increases pressure on institutions that maintain relationships with Israeli organizations and academic centers.
