The European Union classifies Iran's official guard as a "terrorist organization."
The EU is making a major "strategic mistake," Tehran reacted to the decision.
247 - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed on Thursday (28) the decision by European Union member states to classify the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
“I welcome the political agreement on new sanctions against the murderous Iranian regime and on designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. This should have happened a long time ago,” von der Leyen wrote on the X network.
The European Union has imposed additional sanctions on 15 Iranian officials from the security and judicial sectors, including IRGC commanders and high-ranking police officers. With this new measure, asset freezes and travel bans now affect a total of 247 individuals and 50 entities in Iran.
Earlier on Thursday, EU foreign ministers agreed to include the IRGC on the EU's list of terrorist organizations, said the bloc's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas.
“The repression cannot go unanswered. The EU foreign ministers have just taken the decisive step of designating Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working towards its own ruin,” Kallas wrote on the X network.
In late December 2025, protests erupted in Iran amid concerns about rising inflation caused by the weakening of the local currency, the Iranian rial. In several cities, the demonstrations escalated into clashes with police, while protesters chanted slogans critical of the government. There are reports of casualties among members of the security forces and among the protesters. European countries accused the IRGC of massacring protesters.
Tehran reacts
The EU is making a major "strategic mistake" by including the IRGC on its list of terrorist organizations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday.
“Europe, instead, is busy fanning the flames. After seeking the 'snapback' at the behest of the United States, it is now committing another major strategic error by designating our national Armed Forces as a supposed 'terrorist organization',” Araghchi wrote on the X network.
