Envoys will ask the European Commission, the bloc's executive arm, to consider the possibility, according to officials who declined to be identified speaking on a confidential matter, Bloomberg reports.
EU leaders are expected to discuss Ukraine's prospects at a summit in Paris on March 10 and 11, officials said.
However, joining requires a series of steps that can take more than a decade.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told EU lawmakers in Brussels on Tuesday that she had spoken with Zelenskiy about accession and that “there is still a long way to go,” adding, however, that no one “can doubt that a people who so courageously defend our European values belong to our European family.”
