247 - US President Donald Trump suggested on Thursday (9) that Spain be expelled from NATO for refusing to increase its defense spending. The report is from the Xinhua news agency.

"They have no excuse not to do it," Trump told reporters at the White House during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who was on an official visit. "Maybe you should kick them out of NATO, honestly."

"You're going to have to start talking to Spain," Trump said. "You have to call them and find out why they're so behind schedule," he added.

Under pressure from Trump, NATO members agreed in June to increase their military spending to 5% of gross domestic product by 2035.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rejected the goal, calling it "incompatible with our welfare state and our worldview."
