247 - Donald Trump, the current president of the United States, will receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House in Washington on Monday (29). The meeting takes place at a time of growing international isolation for Israel, while European countries and historical allies of Washington, such as the United Kingdom, France, Canada and Australia, have announced their recognition of the State of Palestine. The information is from the agency Reuters, which detailed the US initiative to propose a peace agreement for Gaza and the entire Middle East region.

According to Trump, the goal is to obtain a commitment from Netanyahu to a negotiating framework that would end the war against Hamas and the genocide in Gaza, release hostages, and open the way for a broader regional peace process. "We're getting a very good response because Bibi also wants to make the deal. Everyone wants to make the deal," the president said in a telephone interview with Reuters on Sunday.

International pressure and criticism from Netanyahu

Netanyahu's visit to Washington is his fourth since Trump returned to power in January 2025. The Israeli prime minister arrives in the United States under intense pressure, after facing a diplomatic protest at the UN, where delegations abandoned their speeches in protest against the offensive in Gaza.

Netanyahu called the recognition of Palestine by Western allies a "shameful decision," stating that such a move rewards Hamas. In response, European leaders said that recognition is essential to preserving the prospect of a two-state solution and to ending the war, which has already lasted for almost two years.

American proposal and regional support

Reuters reported that the White House circulated a 21-point plan among Arab and Muslim countries during the UN General Assembly. The document calls for the release of all hostages—dead or alive—the suspension of Israeli attacks against Qatar, and the opening of a dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians to achieve "peaceful coexistence."

Trump highlighted that leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Egypt have contributed to making the proposal viable. "It's called peace in the Middle East, more than just Gaza. Gaza is part of it. But it's peace in the Middle East," he said.

A senior Israeli official, speaking to the agency, stated that "it is still too early to say" whether an agreement has been reached. Netanyahu is expected to present Israel's official response during his meeting with Trump.

War in Gaza and war crimes

Since the attacks of October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants killed approximately 1.200 people in Israel, the Israeli military offensive has left more than 65 dead in Gaza, according to local health officials. The territory is in ruins, with a humanitarian crisis and widespread famine.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on charges of alleged war crimes. The Israeli government rejects the court's jurisdiction and denies the accusations.

Possible tensions at the meeting

Despite the close partnership between Trump and Netanyahu, reflected in the continuous supply of weapons from the United States to Israel, analysts point out that the meeting could bring tensions. Ministers from the more radical wing of the Israeli government argue that, given the international recognition of Palestine, Israel should formally annex parts of the West Bank, a measure that Trump has already publicly rejected.

Last week, the US president declared that he will not allow the annexation of the West Bank, territory claimed by the Palestinians to form their future state, alongside Gaza and East Jerusalem. Experts warn that an Israeli annexation could undermine the Abraham Accords, negotiated during Trump's first term, which allowed the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
