Trump dismisses Macron's announcement regarding recognition of the State of Palestine.
The President of the United States said that France's decision is unimportant and downplayed Emmanuel Macron's statement on the matter.
247 - US President Donald Trump publicly dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron's recent statement regarding Paris's intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine. Trump's statement was recorded by reporters in Washington and published by the Russian state news agency. TASS this Thursday (25).
“That statement has no weight whatsoever. He [Macron] is a very nice guy. I like him, but that statement has no weight,” Trump stated, rejecting the relevance of the French initiative. The statement highlights the stance of the United States under his leadership, reaffirming its alignment with Israel and its opposition to unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.
Macron announced on July 24 that France would formally recognize the State of Palestine during the September session of the United Nations General Assembly. This move is part of a growing diplomatic movement in Europe, with Ireland, Spain, and Norway having already formalized this recognition in 2024, amidst the worsening humanitarian crisis and tensions in the Middle East.
In response to these gestures, the Israeli government reacted vehemently, recalling its ambassadors in Dublin, Madrid, and Oslo for consultations. Furthermore, the ambassadors of the three countries were summoned to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tel Aviv in protest.
France's recognition of the State of Palestine, although formally scheduled for September, has generated intense international repercussions. The decision is seen by many countries and multilateral organizations as an important symbolic step in the attempt to guarantee the Palestinians' right to self-determination and to resume negotiations for a two-state solution—which have been stalled for years.
It is worth remembering that the Soviet Union, of which Russia is the legal successor, had already recognized the State of Palestine in 1988, highlighting Moscow's historical support for the Palestinian cause.
Trump's stance, in his second term as President of the United States, reflects a continuation of the American policy of rejecting unilateral initiatives to recognize Palestine, while maintaining unconditional support for the Israeli government. As a result, the debate surrounding the legitimacy of the Palestinian state and the role of the international community in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains increasingly polarized.
