Trump confirms plans to speak with Xi Jinping to validate TikTok deal.
The White House announced on Tuesday that the US will extend until December 16 the postponement of the measure blocking TikTok in the US.
247 - US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday (16) that he plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 19 to validate the agreement reached on the TikTok video service. The information is from the Sputnik agency.
“We have an agreement on TikTok. I reached an understanding with China. I will speak with President Xi on Friday to confirm everything. We made a very good trade agreement and I hope it will be positive for both countries, but [we made] a very different agreement from those they have made in the past,” Trump told reporters.
The White House announced on Tuesday that the U.S. will extend until December 16 the postponement of the measure that blocks TikTok in the country.
“The deferral of enforcement specified in section 2(a) of Executive Order 14166, dated January 20, 2025 (Enforcement of the Americans Against Foreign Adversarial Controlled Applications Act on TikTok), already extended by Executive Order 14258, dated April 4, 2025 (Extension of Deferral of Enforcement on TikTok), and by Executive Order 14310, dated June 19, 2025 (Further Extension of Deferral of Enforcement on TikTok), is hereby extended until December 16, 2025,” the executive order states.
Earlier, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce reported that, following trade negotiations held in Madrid, China and the US reached a basic consensus on a framework to resolve issues related to TikTok.
"Based on the important consensus reached during the telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries, the parties held frank, in-depth and constructive discussions on trade and economic issues of mutual interest," the ministry said in a statement.
It was highlighted that China and the US “reached a basic consensus on a framework to adequately address issues related to TikTok through cooperation, reducing investment barriers and promoting relevant trade and economic cooperation.”
The parties must now consult on the relevant final documents and proceed with the necessary internal procedures for their approval.
Data
The personal data of users of the TikTok video hosting service will not be transferred to China under the new agreement on the platform's operations in the United States, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday.
“It can’t be… There’s an agreement in place between the private parties conducting the transaction, and it specifically addresses this issue of U.S. user data, so that it won’t be returned to Beijing,” Greer told Fox Business when asked if user information would be sent to China.
He further added that the Donald Trump administration was "perfectly willing" to allow the video service to "go offline" in the United States if there was no agreement that took into account Washington's national security concerns.
Trade War
In June, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to extend the deadline for TikTok's closure by another 90 days, or until September 17. Last year, the US Congress approved a bill stipulating that ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, should divest its shares by January 19. However, Trump has extended this deadline several times since then.
Currently, China and the United States are, in practice, engaged in a trade war, intensified after US President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports in February. In March, the rate was raised to 20%, and after several mutual measures, the US tax on Chinese products reached 145%, while the tariff applied to American suppliers by China reached 125%.
In mid-May, the two countries agreed to mutually reduce trade tariffs to 10%, effective May 14, for a period of 90 days. As a result, China imposed a 10% tariff on American imports, while the US maintained a 30% charge on Chinese products due to the continued 20% tariff on fentanyl. In late spring and early summer, both sides accused each other of violating the preliminary agreements.
