Trump calls the creation of Elon Musk's party "ridiculous"
White House chief says the US was made for a two-party system.
247 - In yet another chapter of the growing political dispute between US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, the Republican on Sunday (6) called the businessman's initiative to found a new political party in the country "ridiculous," Reuters reports.
When questioned by reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump mocked Musk's idea of creating the so-called America Party, officially announced on Saturday. “I think it’s ridiculous to create a third party. We have tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system, and I think creating a third party just adds to the confusion,” the president said, adding: “It really seems to have been designed for two parties. Third parties have never worked, so he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
Trump's criticism didn't stop there. Shortly after, the president attacked Musk again on his social media account, Truth Social, stating: "I'm sad to see Elon Musk completely derailed, essentially becoming a DISASTER over the last five weeks."
Tensions between Trump and Musk intensified after the billionaire announced the creation of the America Party, motivated by the bill signed into law by Trump on Friday. The legislative package, nicknamed the "big beautiful bill," provides for tax and public spending cuts, but, according to Musk, could bankrupt the country.
On social media, Musk harshly criticized the measure. “What was the point of @DOGE if it was only going to increase the debt by $5 trillion?” the businessman wrote on X (formerly Twitter), referring to the government agency for downsizing that he briefly headed. According to critics, Trump's plan is expected to significantly increase the federal budget deficit.
Musk also stated that the new party will work, in next year's legislative elections, to remove Republican lawmakers who supported the controversial bill.
The deterioration in the relationship between Trump and Musk represents a turning point in American politics. Until recently, the two were allies. Musk spent millions of dollars funding Trump's 2024 reelection campaign and, for much of his term, was a constant presence alongside the president at public events and in the Oval Office of the White House.
