Trump attacks US democratic credibility and uses racist narratives, says Human Rights Watch.

247 - US President Donald Trump has attacked the pillars of his own country's democracy, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in its annual report released Wednesday (4). HRW cites the crackdown on immigration, threats to voting rights and other policies of the Republican president.

The Trump administration relied on racist stereotypes and “adopted policies and rhetoric aligned with white nationalist ideology,” the report says.

“It’s truly incredible to see how the Trump administration has really undermined all the pillars of US democracy, all the checks and balances of power,” HRW executive director Philippe Bolopion told reporters, according to statements released by the agency. Reuters"We see a very hostile environment in the US and a rapid decline in the quality of democracy in this country," he added.

He criticized the degrading treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, the killing of two people in Minneapolis by homeland security forces, and the deportation of hundreds of migrants to a mega-prison in El Salvador known for its harsh conditions.

HRW also criticized US military attacks on boats accused without evidence of transporting drugs in the Caribbean Sea and criticized Trump for attacking Venezuela, which Bolopion told reporters at a press conference was "risking a new human rights disaster."

In 2026, “the fight for the future of human rights will be more intense in the US, with consequences for the rest of the world,” said Bolopion.

“Many Western allies have chosen to remain silent about the American measures because they fear increased tariffs and weakened alliances. What we urgently need now is a strong global alliance of countries that promote human rights and a rules-based world order,” he said.
