The agreement on critical minerals specifically addresses mining and processing activities, according to the Sputnik news agency. The broader implementation document outlines measures to strengthen and "advance the alliance between Japan and the United States."

The agreement comes amid renewed US threats over the Chinese territory of Taiwan, claimed by the People's Republic of China.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi that Japan's new cabinet is expected to have a "good start in engaging with China and fix the first button on the shirt," according to statements released by Xinhua news agency.
Noting that the history and issue of Taiwan are directly related to the "foundations of bilateral relations" and "basic good faith between the two sides," Wang expressed hope that Japan would "join efforts with China to preserve this political foundation and promote the continuous improvement and development of bilateral relations in the right direction," according to the Chinese news agency's report.
